Improv for EAL Speakers

IMPROV FOR EAL (English as an Additional Language) Speakers

Facilitator: Aren Morris

The sessions:

This series unfolds as ten participatory 90 minute sessions where EAL learners will be introduced to the basic concepts of improvisation as a means to learn, play, improvise and of course speak in English. Boal said “Theatre was rehearsal for life,” and this couldn’t more true than within these sessions for EAL speakers. To improvise in an additional language, is to authentically engage and communicate with that language.

Dates are as follows: Monday evenings from 6:30-8 pm within the Bella Rose Theatre, January 15, 22 & 29, February 5, 12, 19, & 26, March 5, 19 & 26.

The participants:

The group will require a minimum of 10, maximum of 15+ participants who are capable of working at CLB 4+ (intermediate to advanced). Participants should be prepared to immerse themselves in the dynamics of group play, improvisation and community/ trust building.

Note: If the interest exists, the hope is that a course for those who place lower than CLB 4+ (beginners to intermediate) will be offered in the Spring or Fall session.

The facilitator:

Aren Morris is a writer, improviser and drama educator. She holds an MA in Education where she explored Theatre as a form of Literacy and published her thesis, Theatre of Possibilities, Collective Creation and Improvisation for Social Justice in the Secondary High School Drama Classroom.

Aren has been a high school drama teacher in the HRSB for over 15 years, where she found particular success with EAL and FSL students and was recognized by the NSISP in 2015.

She is a sometimes actor, sometimes director, constant life enthusiast and creative spirit. Teaching and theatre have been both, her passion and her poison, as all true delights will be. Aren is thrilled to be using her skills and experiences in this new way as part of the Bella Rose Theatre’s Educational Programming for 2018.
