Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along BlogThe musical “Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Blog” was written by Joss Whedon in 2008. Whedon has written and produced titles such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Toy Story.” Dr. Horrible is an aspiring Super villain who is desperately trying to get accepted into the Evil League Of Evil, the culmination of evilness in the world. But as we all know, evil never triumphs. There to stop him at every turn his nemesis, the town’s ego driven super hero, Captain Hammer is always around to thwart his every move. To add insult to injury, Captain Hammer is also dating Penny, the girl of Dr. Horrible’s dreams. “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” is an internet musical phenomenon that has taken the world by storm and in 2008 even won an Emmy Award. All profits from the show will be donated to an organization established a little over a year ago called MYST: ‘Maritime Youth Standing Together’. MYST is a group formed entirely of Halifax teenagers that through their fundraising efforts have raised over $13,500.00 and built a school in Africa. The group was founded by Halifax West student Rita-Clare LeBlanc after she received a Christmas gift of $77.12 from her uncle the year before to invest in a cause of her choice. It wasn’t an easy decision for a 16 year old, but when she attended an Anglican youth conference about the lack of education in Africa, she was immediately piqued by the idea of building a school in an African Country. Starting with 4 friends and now 30 members, MYST has grown tremendously in the past year and a half. With many fundraisers under their belt, the group continues to plan events to bring communities together both here in Halifax and overseas in Mali. They recently achieved their initial goal of building their first school in Mali and are now adding features to the school such as a community drinking well and a backpack sponsorship program. They are planning to use the profits from the Dr. Horrible Musical to add a music program to the school they have built. That just added to the motivation of making this production happen. Knowing that our music will help other students make music! Beginning in September 2011, MYST will be starting a new journey to build a second school. The Evil League Of Theatre is a group of High School Students who formed a company after the unfortunate cancellation of their school musical earlier this year. They decided to put on our own musical, completely student-run and independent. Knowing it would take everything they had to pull it off; they gathered together a group of committed individuals to truly make the most of their unexpected situation. With no support or funding to speak of, they chose the fun but manageable musical, Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. |
